Thank goodness for high ISO's.  I shot most of these at around 4000.

What am I using to stay connected? Besides a long USB cable with extension, and a NIkon D3:

Sofortbild and Nikon's ViewNX

These two programs are free!  Plus, they work great.

I used to have the images imported directly into Lightroom, but not anymore.  Since I'm often shooting RAW, I don't like Lightroom's RAW converter as much as Nikon's ViewNX.  (I will use Lightroom later on if desired.)

If you're going to try this, don't forget to:

• change the USB setting, in the camera's menu, from Mass Storage to MTP/PTP.  
• go into Sofortbild's preferences, select the folder you want the images saved to
• open ViewNX to that folder
• connect the camera to computer, and start shooting

If you're unsure of your exposure open one of the test images in Photoshop.  Do a quick facemask histogram to confirm your not over or under-exposing the model.  

To do this just lasso the face, and look at the histogram.  That way if your monitor is off you won't be fooled.
