Kat & Nate

This weekend I was down in Dayton photographing Kat and Nate for their engagement session.

Nate told me before we started that he was a little unsure of what was going to happen. I assured him he had nothing to worry about, and I wouldn't be making him pose in any awkward positions.

I know how he feels. Even though I love photography I'm not a big fan of having my own picture taken. Others have felt the same way(mainly guys), but what they've found is a very natural approach. I'm wanting them to be as much themselves as possible so I can capture who they truly are. Once they're let go to just be themselves it all ends up working out naturally.

The engagement session is a great tool because it gives us all a chance to get comfortable with one another, and they learn how I am behind the camera, as well as my lovely wife Sarah who shot this session with me.

Fortunately, with all the bad weather we've been having here in Ohio, Saturday turned out to be one of the best days of the year, without a single cloud in the sky.

Next month we'll be up in Michigan to shoot their big day.

Nikon's Creative Lighting System

Nikon's SB-800 Speedlights allow you to get very creative. I've posted an image today that illustrates one use.

Using two flashes, I positioned the first to completely blow out the white background. The second was put into an umbrella to illuminate my model.

I created this in my basement, so you can do it to. It's just white paper. The reflection on the floor comes from her standing on a piece of plexiglass.

What's really cool, is if you have a D200 (and I think the D80) it will act as the controller for the remote flashes. Go into your menu, choose flash, Commander Mode. You can create up to three groups of flashes, called A, B, C. You can also control the power output from within the camera, rather than going over to the flash to make the adjustment.

If you don't have one of the above cameras, then their needs to be an SB-800 on top of the camera to act as the master controller.

(For those of you with SB-600's, they can be used as remotes, too, just not as the master.)

Last thing, if you're using a flash meter you'll need to get the IR filter from Nikon (about $12) to slide on the hotshoe and cover the D200's popup flash preflash. Even though the D200's flash might be turned off, it still emits something undetectable to our eye as the master controller, but can be seen by the flash meter, which messes up the reading.

Stark Styles Magazine shoot

These are images I captured this morning for Stark Styles Magazine. I was shooting their front cover for the upcoming issue, as well as some portraits and candids of the three entertainers featured in this issue.

Their names are:

Ken Groves - ventriloquist

Dan Zola - trumpeter

Ed Ellis - magician

It was a great time photographing them because of their high energy, and hilarious stories. I believe this issue will be out next month.

Many thanks to publisher Brent Barnhart for having me out.

WPPI 2007

There are so many awesome things to photograph in Las Vegas and California. These are just a sampling of what I captured. The most fun was driving from LA up into the Red Rock Canyon. Fortunately, my rental vehicle was a 4x4, which was needed. (I was way out where I shouldn't have been. Thought at one point I'd be spending the night out in the middle of the canyon!) One of the awesome parts of being there was the silence. The only sound was that of the wind blowing. It was music.
